Cutting back on coffee (+ a discount code for 10% off green teas)

Disclosure: I was gifted this matcha for a free and honest review. As a Japanese Green Tea Co. affiliate, I will be compensated for sales made using my discount code.

Happy matcha Monday! I don’t know why I decided that now was a good time to go cold turkey on the coffee, while working and momming full-time during a pandemic, but I did, and it’s going… some sort of way. I have had a couple days of weakness where I gave in to the bean juice, but for the most part, I’ve started each day with some sort of black tea and a splash of almond milk, unless I’m feeling super sleepy. Then I pull out the big stops and whisk up some matcha.

If you’re new to matcha

Unlike coffee, matcha doesn’t give me the jitters. It provides energy without shakiness, and is full of antioxidants and flavor. The process of preparing is also a good time to practice mindfulness.

To get started, use a bowl (I have a matcha one, but you could use any deep bowl for your first try), and add one teaspoon of matcha. Bring one cup of water to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, or about 27 degrees Celsius. You could make it with a kitchen whisk, like I tried to when I first started sipping it. But a chasen isn’t too pricey and is definitely worth investing in to get that major frothy layer up top.

What I’m enjoying lately

My current matcha I’ve been enjoying is from Japanese Green Tea Co. I love the balance of vegetal flavor and sweetness in their matcha. The company also carries many other kinds of loose-leaf and bagged tea, as well as teaware, a book and gifts. I first tried their teas in 2017, and they are “the only US-based company to source tea directly from Arahataen Green Tea Farms in the Shizuoka prefecture in Japan.” If you’re new to green teas and are seeking something fruity, I’ve had their mikan and lemon powdered green teas in the past and enjoyed how the sweetness balanced out the earthiness of the tea.
