The Oscars aired this evening, concluding the award show season, and more importantly, a big time for fashion. Stars sparkled, and many kept it subtle, at one of the biggest nights in Hollywood. Closing the doors on fancy looks, these are my choices for best and worst Academy Award red carpet looks.
Best: Emma Watson is a sophisticated lady, and she wore the part well in this black Vera Wang gown. The sparkling top meshed well with the dark skirt, and her dark red lip followed suit for a chic, vampy look. Photo/GETTY
Best: Cate Blanchett’s floral-detailed Giorgio Armani gown was stunning and springy. PHOTO/ Getty
Best: Alfre Woodard looked absolutely stunning in this navy bejeweled gown. While she showed her decolletage, it wasn’t over the top because of the tulle. The whole look is just sophisticated and gorgeous– a simply curled bob, hoop earrings and a sparkling clutch complimented the outfit without taking away from the gorgeous gown.
Best: Angelina Jolie looked very old Hollywood glam in this sparkling Elie Saab gown. The golden hue complimented her skin tone, and keeping her hair and makeup simple kept the focus on the gown. Photo/GETTY
Best: This pale pink and gold detailed gown looked great on Lady Gaga, and accentuated her curves in a classy way. The cape part adds a regal feeling to the ensemble.
Best: When does Lupita Nyong’o not dress good? This pale blue Prada gown left her looking like royalty, making her one of the best dressed as usual.
Best: This Alexander McQueen gown was perfect for Sandra Bullock. While she is older, she has the body to pull it off, and it fit her perfectly.
Best: Sara Ishaq’s golden gown was sparkling and detailed– another great Hollywood Glam look.
Worst: Bette Midler did not look too hot in this Reem Acara gown. The cap sleeves are unflattering and the style is not good for her age or body type. While the material is pretty, it kind of screams “Christmas tablecloth.”
Worst: What is with all of the big patterns on dresses this season? Catherin Martin is drowning in this flamboyantly printed gown that would probably better suit a window pane.
Worst: This dress made Cristin Milioti look kind of grey. Her pale complexion could have looked stunning with a more vibrant shade, but this dress mixed with the black lipstick made her resemble a zombie.
Worst: Jared Leto’s mismatched Saint Lauren suit was sloppy and strange, especially with his messy ombre hair.
Worst: Lea Drucker’s dress looks unfinished. The detailing on the bottom of the toga style dress just looks random. Photo/GETTY
Worse: It seems that Liza Minnelli was going for the Smurf look at this year’s Academy Awards. She got attention, but probably not for the right reasons.
Worst: Pharrell Williams loves to make a statement, but the “Happy” singer looks like he forgot his pants with these bermuda shorts that make his legs look oddly feminine, while his date, Helen Lasichanh, seemed to have gotten style advice from Jared Leto.
Worst: Veerle Baetens’ gown looks sloppy– like a black trash bag with electric tape on top. Her slicked back hair didn’t help her cause either.
