She stars in a sitcom. She’s one half of a band. She started a website to share “giggles.” And most recently, she teamed up with Tommy Hilfiger for a line inspired by her signature vintage style.
Known for her signature blunt bangs and cute, girly looks, this week’s style star is Zooey Deschanel.
Early life and acting career
The daughter of filmmaker and director Caleb Deschanel and actress Mary Jo Deschanel, Zooey was born in Santa Monica, California. She lived in Los Angeles, but moved around a lot as a child because of her parents.
While she had her first film role in 1999 flick Mumford, Zooey’s appearance in Almost Famous was her breakout role. The has gone on to appear in many films since, including Elf, 500 Days of Summer, Yes Man and Our Idiot Brother.
2011 brought a new venture for Deschanel, with the first airing of Fox’s New Girl. She stars in the show as happy-go-lucky Jess, who moves in with a group of guys after a bad break up. New Girl is currently on its third season.
Music
Zooey started in music as a part of jazz cabaret If All the Stars Were Pretty Babies, performing around L.A. with actress Samantha Shelton.
Later, she formed duo She & Him with band member M. Ward. The two have released three volumes of music and a Christmas album. Their sound is light, and old fashioned, with beautiful duets in addition to pieces spotlighting Zooey’s strong vocals.
Fashion and social media
Around the same time that “New Girl” started, Zooey launched “Hello Giggles,” a website full of DIY, advice, fun, fashion and blog posts from contributors.
Through her site, as well as social media, Zooey is very interactive with fans, sharing what’s going on with her, including her latest Nails of the Day.
For Zooey, fashion is a big deal. Many people admire her girly, cute style, which consists of vintage dresses worn with tights. There are entire websites and blogs dedicated to her fashion.
Sharing her fashion sense with others, Zooey has teamed up with Tommy Hilfiger to release a line of 60s-style dresses for a line at Macy’s.
“I am a fashion fanatic and I am always looking for new ways to incorporate vintage, feminine pieces into my own wardrobe,” she said in an interview. “Tommy and I share many of the same inspirations—old school music, classic films and old Hollywood icons—and his guidance during the design process helped to put a really unique twist on each piece.”
Zooey Deschanel is more than just a pretty face. She is puts energy into everything she does. In addition to being a talented actress, singer and fashionista, she is also passionate about many causes, including animal rights. Zooey supports the Bill Foundation animal rescue organization of Los Angeles, where she got her two puppies.
